CANCELLED: Depeche Mode 'Tour of the Universe 2009'

Today, Wednesday, Aug 12 7:30p
at Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, CA

CANCELLATION UPDATE: Depeche Mode has been forced to cancel their scheduled appearance on Wednesday, August 12th at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California due to doctor's orders that lead singer Dave Gahan be on complete vocal rest for 48 hours. Because of their busy schedule, a new Bay Area date will not be rescheduled this year.

"San Francisco is one of the most important cities to the band and we are devastated that we have been forced to cancel this date," said Dave Gahan. "We hope to be back soon to play for all of our fans in the area."

Refunds will be issued at the point of purchase.

Announcement - 17-Year Anniversary Party

The very first New Wave City event took place in August of 1992. Normally we try to have the Anniversary Party in Sept or Oct, just because there is usually a fifth Sat in one of those months and that makes it easier to book an extra event. Last year we kept trying to find a location, but with no luck the party didn't happen until our regular first-Saturday date in Dec at DNA.

This year I am happy to announce that we have already secured a venue.

Nick Rhodes signs NWC flier

Nick Rhodes leaving the Fillmore last week (7/7/09). Someone holds an NWC flier against his shoulder at .56 seconds and he autographs it. Pretty cool!

Notice also that he is accompanied by Dave Gahan in the hat- who is now apparently working security for the Fillmore.

As has been the case for the history of NWC. the DM fans were out en mass and packed the DNA Lounge for this awesome tribute night. DJ/VJ Low-Life did a great job keeping the videos flowing smoothly and DJ Shindog was his usual rockin' self. Depeche Mode CD's and concert tickets, along with Howard Jones concert tickets, were won by lucky people who managed to hang on to the flyer (these cards are marked!) they were given at the door. An excellent mixture of New Wave filled the upstairs room all night from DJ's Donimo and Tomas Diablo. Free yummy cupcakes for the masses were provided by Kristin's Cupcakery (http://www.kristinscupcakery.com).

Favorite quote of the night: Overheard in the men's room, "I don't know what it is about New Wave City, but the music just seems more real here."

Has anyone seen the Warfield box office open Sundays, like the Fillmore ? Can you buy tickets for other Goldenvoice concerts and venues ?

The Box Office is located on the premises, but is only open 1 1/2 hour prior to show time. To purchase tickets without service charge, The Warfield Box Office is open on Sundays from 10am-4pm and on show nights once doors are open until the headliner goes on.

1. Not seeing any animal costumes for the first time? No.
2. The excellent music? No, but special kudos to Tim and Tomas who did an outstanding job DJing upstairs.
3. Seeing Jennie in a short, black wig? Very cute but no.
4. Watching Amanda fall on her ass AGAIN during the slam dancing? No.

Only the second ever Erasure tribute in the history of NWC, but based on
the huge turnout, you can bet there will be another one! Great crowd and
great music, and we managed to raise $500 for a very worthwhile charity.
NWC bought the first 200 customers a $1 raffle ticket and the drawing was
held a little after midnight. Amazingly the same guy (Glen - one of our regulars)
somehow won first AND second prize - (and yes, we shook/mixed the tickets up
really well, and the beautiful and unbiased Chrissy (who was personally strip
searched by me) pulled the winning tickets) - which included four tickets to see
Depeche Mode and four tickets to see Howard Jones. WOW!!! Score!
Great job by returning guest DJ Andy T in the main room, and the upstairs room
was rocked all night by the always awesome DJ Low-Life and the equally
extraordinary guest DJ Kenny.
100% of the proceeds from the raffle went to Variety Children's Charity* (http://www.varietync.org)

"The successes at that time of mini-LPs by Missing Persons, Thomas Dolby, and Duran Duran prompted Capitol to change the marketing strategy of the group from that of New Romantics to a dance band. Duran Duran's 'CARNIVAL' remix EP was released in the US in September of 1982 to great success. DJs around the country began to play the remixed dance versions of the 'RIO' album tracks. Apparently, the band was unhappy with some of the previous mixing on 'RIO', and at the invitation of Capitol Records North America, proceeded to have it reworked. Being pleased with the remixes already done on 'Rio', 'Hungry Like The Wolf', and 'Hold Back The Rain', the band, with the approval of Capitol, once again enlisted the help of David Kershenbaum."

That was fun!! Good music everyone!

I can't believe DNA security came out on the dance floor and forced Amanda and I to stop slam dancing to the Violent Femmes!! W...T...F...??? Why do people get so upset over slam dancing? That's a natural part of new wave music. I think people should really get pissed about those large groups of people who just stand and talk on the dance floor. Did anyone notice the bridal party with the glowing necklaces? Those women just stood on the dance floor and yakked the whole night. At one point I felt compelled to dance through the group and knock over a drink or two.

No, I didn't feel guilty about it.

DEVO have announced the release of their first studio album since 1990,

On May 6 they will perform their 1978 debut album 'Q: Are We Not Men, We Are Devo!'
in its entirety at London's Kentish Town Forum. The show will precede the band's
scheduled appearance at All Tomorrow's Parties: The Fans Strike Back event at
Minehead on May 8, where they will play a set featuring their most popular songs.

NWC doesn't do a U2 Tribute very often, so when we do it's a special night.
It usually serves to remind me (and hopefully others) how great those early
U2 albums were/are. For some reason the song Surrender still resonates
with me like it did twenty-six years ago.

Love love love that song!
Although we all missed DJ Melting Girl not being there, fill-in DJ's Danny
White & Donimo did a great job! And, as always, Low-Life had an excellent
video-filled set. The highlight of the evening was the Fashion Contest. Could it
have been any easier to win Depeche Mode tickets? All you had to do was
dress up and then get up on the stage and dance around. About ten people did
so and half of them won the new U2 CD AND Depeche Mode tickets. Score!
(I will post pictures asap) If you didn't know about the Fashion Contest, then you
need to get on the NWC email list and receive the "NWC News". Sign up on the
NWC website. You will have another chance to win DM tickets
(and Howard Jones, too) at next month's NWC event.

And don't forget, tickets for DM go on sale this Sunday, March 15th!!!

Wow! Awesome crowd! I just love it when people get dressed up, especially on their own. No, I don't mean that I usually dress them. I mean that we didn't even encourage people by having a "best dressed" contest or anything like that. Some great New Ro outfits! Again, I had a most excellent time playing this "host" thing. Now I understand why people come to NWC. Dancing, drinking, socializing and having a whole lotta fun! Cool music from guest DJ Andy T and the great and powerful, Shindog. Guest DJ Danny White and resident DJ Low-Life rocked the upstairs room all night.

Songs that haunt you

"FWIW, the songs still reverberating in my head while wandering around

"Let Me Go." There's probably a dream-interpretation-type story there,
but damned if I know what it is..."

This was posted by lisaw in a set list thread last October and I never forgot it. "Let Me Go" has a way of getting locked in my head for days. Sometimes I feel like I'm living inside of it rather than it living inside of me.

Do touring bands dislike S.F ?

I was shocked to read my newest favorite band's blog comments about S.F. I know some tourists are surprised about the S.F. homeless, but I thought a band that has toured for years had seen "everything". I guess playing 2 nights at the Warfield, and wandering around that neighborhood shocked them. ( 2nd blog down the page )

"I think it's time to dispel a few myths about San Francisco for those of you who have not yet visited this place. First of all, this is NOT some hippy Eden, or any place of "good vibes". No way. I'm sure it (maybe) exists somewhere out in this town, but none of us here can see it, nor have we ever seen it. There are more homeless junkie crackheads bleeding and falling all over the place here than in all other places I have ever seen combined.

This is not new information. Every time The Stills come here it's the same thing. It is fucking frightening. I saw an old woman pushing a shopping cart, dressed for Arctic winter singing "I'm Sorry, So Sorry" to herself over and over. One of the Kings Of Leon crew guys saw a woman defecating on the street. It smells like piss everywhere. EVERYONE is talking to themselves, and yes, bleeding."

"New Romantic" is a term originally coined circa '81 by Richard James Burgess, (one-time Spandau Ballet producer and drummer on the Strip LP) which was later applied by the music press as a catch-all term for the dressed-up, make-up wearing pop bands of the early eighties.

The term "new romantic" was retrospectively applied to the scene that emerged out of a West End clubnight called "Billy's - A Club For Heroes". Started by Steve Strange in 1978, originally at a small venue called Gossips, then later at a nightclub called "the Blitz". Basically, the theme of the club was glammy extreme dressing - the more outrageous and glamourous you looked, the higher up the ladder you were. Rusty Egan, the DJ, played tracks by Bowie, Roxy Music, Kraftwerk, Chic and lots of electronic dance music. George O'Dowd, who later became Boy George, worked in the cloakroom (until he was fired for stealing from peoples' handbags.) Steve Strange worked as doorman and developed a notorious reputation for turning away anyone whose appearance wasn't up to standard.

Around late '79, bands started to emerge from this scene. Steve Strange and Rusty Egan formed Visage, who had a Top 10 hit with "Fade to Grey", while the early Spandau Ballet regularly played at the club. By late 1980, several rival clubs in this vein also existed in London.

Meanwhile, Adam and the Ants, incorrectly thought of as a Punk band, were developing their own hard core of extreme-dressing followers - the Antpeople. After the Malcolm McLaren incident, loyalties were somewhat split between the New Ants and Bow Wow Wow. Adam's pirate/warrior image and Bow Wow Wow's pirate-influenced clothes were also becoming a new fashion trend. Once the Ants finally shed the last vestiges of punkness by having a major hit, and once Bow Wow Wow were very obviously not a Punk band, the music press were somewhat stuck for ideas as to what category to place these two bands in.

The press also had trouble finding a name for the Blitz club scene. For a long while it was known simply as "the Blitz scene" until Jon Savage, who later wrote the Sex Pistols book
England's Dreaming, wrote an article in The Face magazine entitled "The Cult With No Name" in which he made the link between the Blitz scene and the Ants/BWW. Romantic historical costumes had become a particularly popular look at the Blitz. The result of this was that the Blitz scene and the Ants/Bow Wow Wow axis got firmly lumped together. As far as the press were concerned, the problem of categorizing the Ants, Bow Wow Wow and the Blitz scene had been solved. They were all "New Romantic."

After that, any early-eighties intelligent and arty pop group which liked to dress up
glamorously, wear make-up, and/or play synth pop music got thrown into this category.
Soft Cell, the Human League, Japan, ABC, Ultravox, all were bunged in as were many more.

Later on, the category was extended to include ex Blitz club cloak room attendant, and briefly BWW member, Boy George and his new band Culture Club and Duran Duran, which had started as a Punk band but had moved on to playing dance-influenced pop. Very soon, people were dressing up in the New Romantic fashion to go clubbing and even just going about in the street.

In many ways, the New Romantic style was as important and defining to the eighties,
as Glam Rock was to the seventies.

What Were They Thinking, Songs.

All our favorite new wave artists, at some time, wrote a song so bad that it can be considered their all-time worst recording ever. Skip and I were discussing this the other day and I came up with three of my favorite bands/artists and their worst song ever.

LOVE CATS - The Cure
When this song first came out I was like, "WTF is this?! Wait....that's a CURE song?!?" They went from dark and brooding to this homage to love & kittens. I understand a band wanting to try something different, but c'mon now... get serious. This song still sucks after all these years. Worst song runner up for The Cure is the equally bad, 'Let's Go to Bed'. Give me 'Primary' or 'Fascination Street' any day.

PEEKABOO - Siouxsie & the Banshees
Whichever Banshee came up with the idea of adding an accordion or squeezebox to one of their songs should have been fired on the spot. It was probably Budgie. But hearing the reigning queen of Goth sing, "jeepers creepers where'd you get those peepers..." well, 'nuff said.

THE REFUGEE - U2
I can only imagine what transpired at the band meeting that day.

Bono: "I think I want to write a song about the plight of refugees from around the world."
The Edge: "That's ok but can we make it as un-melodic as possible this time?"
Bono: I don't see why not.
Larry : "Maybe instead of drums I can bang on some pots, pans, and tin cans."
Adam: "...and there better be a chant somewhere in the song or I'm quitting the band."

An excellent turnout considering it was only three days after NYE and our last event. Brought out the die-hard New Wave/Sisters fans and made for a great night. For only the second time in the sixteen-year + history of NWC, I (Skip) did not DJ. Instead I spent the evening playing "Host" - albeit mostly to one lovely lady - and I had an excellent time just dancing and socializing. I could get used to this! DJ Low-Life did a super job filling in for me in the main room, and DJ's Melting Girl and Nako took us to the dark side of New Wave all night in the upstairs room. They were awesome! I'm going to try this "Host" thingy again next event, so find me and we'll have a drink and dance.

Jennifer Love Hewitt and her fiancé Ross McCall have called it quits, PEOPLE has learned.

"They broke up over the holidays and have ended their engagement," says a source close to the couple. "They're both really sad about this. Even their friends are surprised; they seemed really happy. Everyone just wants the best for both of them."

Reps for both Hewitt and McCall had no immediate comment.

The Ghost Whisperer star, 29, got engaged to the Scottish actor, 32, in November 2007 after dating for two years.

While the couple hadn’t announced a date, in October Hewitt told PEOPLE her svelte new look was prompted not by those infamous 2007 bikini pictures – and the ensuing controversy over body image after she took to her blog to defend herself – but by her upcoming nuptials.

"I'm getting ready to turn 30 and get married and all those things," Hewitt said. "This year was my year to try to glow from within and feel better."

McCall, who costarred in the 2001 HBO miniseries Band of Brothers and stars in the Starz drama Crash, appeared in one episode of Hewitt's hit show Ghost Whisperer, in 2006.

The 'Rec and Party' Department
Editor- Empire builders at the Recreation and Park Department ("Outside Lands brought in cash - Rec and Park wants to bring in more music festivals," Nov. 19) need their knuckles rapped. They want to schedule more rock concerts in Golden Gate Park such as the Outside Lands Festival, which disrupted the lives of tens of thousands of Richmond and Sunset residents this past August.

This event drew hundreds of comments in response to several Chronicle stories about it. They ran about 3 to 1 against the affair. But the real victims of the Outside outrage were the neighbors who put up with three consecutive days of obscene noise.

Many of these folks are fairly recent immigrants unaccustomed to complaining, and city officials count on their silence, just as they do when they ship neighborhood kids off to distant schools. These people are entitled to peace and quiet and should be spared events catering to [ feckless white kids with too much money and too much time on their hands. ]

The purpose of the Recreation and Park Department is to provide services within the budget drawn up by the mayor and Board of Supervisors. The fledging fundraisers and rock promoters on its staff should seek employment elsewhere.

Parking tickets in S.F. - 3% grade limit for curbing wheels

I saw someone get a $45.00 parking ticket for not curbing their wheels Saturday on Clement St. The ticket said " 3% grade limit " ! I heard only the SFPD could issue the tickets, but starting last August meter maids can write these tickets. Clement St. looked pretty level to me, and a 3% grade is almost flat, so car wheels should be curbed at all times.

Great Day of the Dead night at DNA. Thanks to everyone who dressed up and braved the first storm of the season. Some awesome costumes! I guess Shindog and I are like an old married couple now as we both showed up unintentionally dressed as one of the Ramones.

Two of the "80's Icon"costume contest winners were groups of five people!!! The Solid Gold Dancers, and The Breakfast Club- five friends who dressed like Claire, Andrew, Brian, Allison, and John Bender. They had the movie poster "pose" down perfectly and their outfits and look were spot-on. And the third winner, who really shouldn't have won because he wasn't in an 80's icon costume, was dressed like Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd. I was rooting for the Andie & Duckie couple, but they came in fourth.

Hey Punk, That Poster's Off To Auction

Punk rock is on the block - make that the auction block.

Memorabilia from some of punk rock's biggest acts and seminal moments - including a scrawled flyer for one of the Clash's first shows and publicity photos signed by the Sex Pistols - is headed for a Nov. 24 Christie's auction.

The event includes more than 120 records, photos and promotional pieces for such punk, garage rock and new wave legends as the Velvet Underground, Patti Smith, the Ramones, David Bowie, Blondie, the Cure and the Smiths.

The auction is Christie's first to focus on punk mementos, signaling the collectible status of a brash, anti-authoritarian rock movement that largely thumbed its nose at posterity.

"Ten years ago, punk memorabilia probably wouldn't be something we'd be auctioning here," said Simeon Lipman, Christie's pop culture chief. "But now, people of a certain age have a certain ability to splurge on this material."

Should they care to, highlights include a rare poster for a 1976 Ramones concert in London widely credited with helping inspire such British punk titans as the Clash and the Sex Pistols and a flyer for a show later that year featuring the latter two bands and the Buzzcocks.

Other prime finds: a copy of the Sex Pistols' first press release and a 1966 promotional packet in which an up-and-comer called David Jones promulgated his new last name: Bowie.

The various punk items are expected to fetch between $300 and $6,000 apiece.

The items generally weren't designed to last for decades, making the few that have survived all the more tantalizing, Lipman said.

The auction also features artist-designed toys and several big-ticket classic-rock collectibles, such as the portable organ John Lennon played in the Beatles' indelible 1965 appearance at Shea Stadium.

It was broken during the show and quickly traded in at an Atlanta music shop, where the owner realized its significance and held onto it, Lipman said. The now-functioning organ is expected to fetch $150,000 to $200,000.

I've been waiting for this one ever since they "just for fun", played a couple of re-union gigs in Athens. I still remember lead singer, Vanessa Hay, bouncing around the I-Beam stage in her trademark vintage dress, in 1981, singing "Turn up the Volume ! "

Just had my first colonoscopy today and they gave me a clean bill of health. They couldn't find any traces of hair which goes to disprove Patricia's therory that I have my head up my ass.

My only concern was when the doctor and nurses shut off the lights just before the procedure began. I guess it's so I wouldn't be able to identify them in court.

I'll tell you more about it at the next NWC on November 1st. I may dress up as a polyp. No wait... make that a polyp in drag.
