"SYNTH NIGHT" - set lists

NEW WAVE CITY
The First & Foremost '80s Dance Party
"SYNTH NIGHT"
Saturday, July 5th, 2008
DNA Lounge

Another excellent NWC! I gave myself a little pep talk beforehand to make sure that I really enjoyed this one. After all, NWC is not, despite our amazing success month after month, going to go on forever (is it?). And since Synth is my favorite sub-genre of New Wave, I hauled out more vinyl than normal and played some old faves. I had a great time and I hope you did too! As usual, I could have danced more- why didn't you ask me to dance? Next time.

It was like "I-Beam reunion night" for some weird reason as lots of I-Beam regulars showed up- P'lito & Mrs. P., Ollie, Lynn, Mark, Lisa, Sharon, Steven, and of course Shindog and myself. Did I miss anyone?

You can listen to the entire night’s music again for the two weeks following any event at DNA:

Yazoo review and set list.

Awesome show on Monday night! Here's a nice review and the set list...

Review: Synth-pop legend Yaz brings back its '80s magic
By Jim Harrington
Contra Costa Times

Vince Clarke is a founding member of three of the most significant synth-pop bands in history: Depeche Mode, Erasure and Yaz. The first two have each been around now for well over 20 years. By contrast, Yaz released just two albums during its two-year run (1982-1983). Yet, a lasting mark can be made in a relatively short period — and that's exactly what synthesizer king Clarke and vocalist Alison Moyet accomplished with their U.K. duo Yaz.

Bay Area fans haven't forgotten the albums, "Upstairs at Eric's" and "You and Me Both," or the great dance hits "Situation" and "Don't Go," which is why a full house at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland on Monday greeted Yaz as it launched the North American portion of its reunion tour. The evening marked the first time that the duo had ever performed in the Bay Area.

Better late than never.

Kicking off the show with the defiant torch-song anthem "Nobody's Diary," Yaz would deliver some 80 minutes' worth of synth-pop music that firmly connected with the crowd. The music was both nostalgic (leading people to remember all the times they had danced to these tunes in the past) and excitingly fresh (causing some to wonder when they had last heard a modern synth-pop track that was good as what Yaz turned out in the early '80s).

More so than with most duos, Yaz's appeal was always evenly split between its two members.

Clarke was the guy responsible for the crazy, addictive dance-floor beats. We had no reason to suspect that those grooves wouldn't hold up at the Paramount — and hold (they) did. Standing nearly motionless behind a small-stack of computer equipment, the 48-year-old Englander pushed all the right keys as Yaz continued through "Bad Connection," "Mr. Blue" and "Good Times."

Moyet's deep, husky and sensual voice seems, at least on paper, an unlikely companion to Clarke's cool electro blizzard. Yet, the two ended up meshing so perfectly on record, combining at times to create a sound best described as techno blues. Moyet, however, was in her early 20s when Yaz made its two albums and there were legitimate concerns that the vocalist, now 47, wouldn't be able to handle her signature vocal parts as convincingly in 2008.

Although she has lost some of her range, Moyet still managed to impress in Oakland as she soared through "Goodbye '70s," "In My Room" and "Walk Away From Love."

The stark, futuristic set design fit the music. The main props were the two strangely diaphanous video screens located behind the players, which showed a variety of images, from hands waving in the air to old TV commercials.

The bald-headed Clarke was robotically business-like, never addressing the crowd and rarely looking up from his expensive gadgets. Moyet showed more life, especially toward the end of the concert as she danced about the front of the stage. The real show, however, was in the crowd, as fans gyrated exuberantly to the two songs that everyone was waiting to hear: "Don't Go" and "Situation."

As the final techno beat was absorbed into the art-deco walls, one thing was made abundantly clear: These fans never forgot Yaz.

Set list
1. "Nobody's Diary"
2. "Bad Connection"
3. "Mr. Blue"
4. "Good Times"
5. "Tuesday"
6. "Ode to Boy"
7. "Goodbye '70s"
8. "Too Pieces"
9. "In My Room"
10. "Anyone"
11. "Walk Away From Love"
12. Instrumental
13. "State Farm"
14. "Sweet Thing"
15. "Winter Kills"
16. "Midnight"
17. "Unmarked"
18. "Bring Your Love Down (Didn't I)"
19. "Don't Go"
Encore
20. "Only You"
21. "Situation"

As it starts all of a sudden it hits me... Bouncing M&M's in my head!! All I could see were these stupid M&M's bouncing around on a trampoline. What the heck?! M&M's/Mars has ruined that song for me!!!

NEW WAVE CITY
The First & Foremost '80s Dance Party
"THE BLACK & BLACK BALL"
Saturday, June 7th, 2008
DNA Lounge

It was great to see (almost) everyone decked out in their blackest finery. Considering all of the "extra" things we had going on this night, I thought it went very smoothly. Seems like the good nights always go by very quickly and this one was over in a flash.

Special thanks go out to: The Cheese Puffs, who were very organized, timely, and professional (and HOT!!!). To our special-guest DJ and Mistress of Ceremonies, Nikki Blakk, who was a pleasure to work with. And to our midnight centerpiece, Spellbound, who seem to get better and better eveytime I see them.

And of course, thanks to everyone who came out and especially to all of you that generously donated to our featured charity for the evening, Variety Children's Charity. NWC did a dollar-for-dollar match and doubled the amount raised. For those of you who didn't make it and would still like to show some support for Variety Children's Charity, you can do so at:
http://varietync.org/
Thank you!

You can listen to the entire night’s music again for the two weeks following any event at DNA:

Tomas Diablo and guest DJs LowLife (New Wave City, 1984) and Fact50 (Debauchery, Less Than Zero) spin the best of the Sisters and their side projects, as well as like-minded Dark Electro, Industrial, New Wave, and Goth.

Strangelove is every first Friday at the CAT CLUB (Folsom and 8th). There's plenty of room to dance around and we keep the party going until 3AM! The DJs play music in the back room, and it's piped through to the front room at a lower volume, giving you the chance to chat at the bar without losing your voice.

"The Cure Tribute" 2008 - set lists

NEW WAVE CITY
The First & Foremost '80s Dance Party
"The Cure Tribute"
Saturday, May 3rd, 2008
DNA Lounge

It was great to hear a lot of music from the cure again at NWC. It had been eighteen months since our last cure tribute. We kept putting off doing a cure night in anticipation of the new double CD release that was originally supposed to come out in September of 2007- and still hasn't. But since we ended up getting three pairs of tix for the cure's upcoming concert at HP Pavilion on May 28th and raising a lot of money for Until There's a Cure with a raffle for the tix, it was worth the wait. Great turnout and a really fun night! Thanks to everyone who came.

For those of you who didn't make it and would still like to show some support for Until There's a Cure, you can do so at:
http://www.until.org

You can listen to the entire night’s music again for the two weeks following any event at DNA:
The very first time I saw your face
I thought of a song
And quickly changed the tune
The very first time I touched your skin
I thought of a story

"Script of the Bridge" 25 years old!

In 2008, The Chameleons landmark 1983 album "Script of the Bridge" will see its 25th Anniversary! To celebrate the band are planning to release a commemorative remastered deluxe two-disc edition of the album.

Taken from Mark Burgess's website ChameleonsVox

"With the full consent of the band a 25th Anniversary release of the Chameleons' album 'Script of The Bridge' is being scheduled for release, probably during December of this year, a little early but just in time for Christmas. A deluxe edition will be available comprising the album itself and an additional disc of extras, alongside a standard one -disc release with less extras for those who might not want to splash out the extra few quid for the full package. Both formats feature an updated sleeve by Reg along with re-vamped inserts and the label is currently exploring various options for re-mastering the original tapes. The Deluxe edition will only be available through mail order via a web site that the label is establishing for the purpose. I'll announce the URL as soon as I have it. The standard one-disc version will be distributed through traditional channels."

Dr. Abacus and Fou Fou HA!
What do you get when you cross Charles Mingus, Motley Crüe, and Scooby Doo? Dr. Abacus, the Bay Area's original lab-coat-clad cartoon jazz combo, blending a dizzying array of horns, vibes, bass, and drums into a mash-up, smash-up, swingin', and boppin' good time.
Andy Taylor Quits Duran Duran

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061026/music_nm/arts_duranduran_dc

LONDON (Reuters) - Guitarist Andy Taylor has left Duran Duran, the veteran pop group said on Thursday.

According to a statement on the band's Web site, Taylor quit the group last weekend, though the remaining four members -- Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and John and Roger Taylor -- intend to carry on recording and performing as Duran Duran.

"As of last weekend we have dissolved our partnership and will be continuing as Duran Duran without Andy," said the statement.

"We have reached a point in our relationship with him where there is an unworkable gulf between us and we can no longer effectively function together."

Fronted by Le Bon, Duran Duran was one of the biggest acts of the 1980s, before reforming five years ago.

"Although obviously disappointed and saddened about this, we are excited about the next chapter of the Duran Duran story and look forward to seeing you all soon," the statement added.

The band is scheduled to give a concert in Chicago in the United States later on Thursday.

NEW WAVE CITY
The First & Foremost '80s Dance Party
"Soundtrack Night"
Saturday, March 1, 2008
DNA Lounge

Soundtrack Night! Wow, that was fun. I was ready for some people to complain about the "interruption" of playing with the sound some scenes from movies, but no one did. I guess everyone realized how much work went into preparing for this night and how unique of a nightclub experience it was. The highlight for me was when everyone sang along very loudly to Danke Schoen from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off". Wayne Newton- who knew!
If you have any photos you would like to share, send them to me at: skipit@sbcglobal.net

You can listen to the entire night’s music again for the two weeks following any event at DNA:
